Water recovery in the southern Basin

As part of the Basin Plan Evaluation, the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) analysed water recovery in 40 communities across the southern Basin – water recovery information is available in the interactive online map below.

The evaluation considered how water recovery has affected the social and economic outcomes in the southern Basin and its communities. This underpinning data includes completed water recovery to 31 October 2016. The community profiles provide more information about the social and economic effects for each community.

Water has been recovered in the southern Basin through either water purchase or on and off farm infrastructure efficiency programs.

On-farm infrastructure efficiency programs allow a portion of the water saved to remain with the irrigator, and the remainder is transferred to the Commonwealth and counts toward the Basin Plan's water recovery target.

Southern Basin summary

The map displays the data specific to 40 southern Basin communities as at 31 October 2016.

Overall, the environmental water recovery in 40 southern Basin communities is comprised of:

  • 156.3 gigalitres (GL) – recovered through infrastructure efficiency programs
  • 877.5 GL – recovered through water purchase.

Total recovery in the 40 communities: 1033.9 GL (infrastructure and purchase).

Net reduction to water availability in the 40 communities: 810 GL (purchase minus water savings retained on-farm of 67 GL).

Overall, water recovery in these communities represent 89% of the total recovered from irrigators in the southern Basin (which includes the Lachlan for the purpose of this analysis).

Using the map

Hover on a community and 4 pieces of data will appear – these data are specifically about that community.

The data includes:

  • total water recovered
  • water recovered through purchase
  • water recovered through infrastructure investments
  • net impact (reduction) on water available for production.

All figures are as at 31 October 2016.

Water recovery in the northern Basin

Water recovery in the northern Basin was analysed as part of the Northern Basin Review conducted by the MDBA, which concluded in 2016.
