Increasing the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the MDBA-funded Murray and Mitta river biological monitoring programs through the development of molecular tools

This report discusses a novel technique using DNA to detect macroinvertebrate organisms in water samples. The technique increases the timeliness, efficiency and cost effectiveness of the MDBA’s biological monitoring programs for the Murray and Mitta Mitta Rivers.

Key highlights include increasing the existing macroinvertebrate DNA database by 271 specimens (collected in this project), and the identification of a protocol that allows amplification of DNA from test organisms' mitochondria.
